All We Wanted was Comfortable Tights

There are lots of brands of tights in the marketplace and one question we get asked often, is “Why Not Too Tights?” For us the answer is easy: comfort plus fashion.

Finding comfortable tights was always a challenge for us and for our friends. We’d ask for recommendations of brands to try, and while there were plenty of products out there that offered control top and body shaping, that wasn’t what we were looking for. What we wanted was ultimate ease – comfortable tights that felt like yoga pants. We couldn’t figure out why all our friends wore yoga pants nonstop but grimaced at the thought of putting on a pair of tights. Don't get us wrong, we love our Lulu Lemon's as much as the next gal, but that just doesn't fly at the office!

So our original thought process was, “how do we take the comfort of yoga pants and pair that with the formality of tights.” The secret, as we all now know, is in the waistband. We spent months and months developing a comfortable waistband that felt like yoga pants. There is just enough elastic to keep the tights in place but not enough to cause discomfort or the “squished” feeling that are caused by so many other brands. We went on a quest to create the world’s most comfortable tights and we think we knocked it out of the park! Check them out and let us know what you think!

United We Stand

These past few weeks have certainly sent me into a tizzy. Trying to stay focused on work, on my daughter, and on my life has been clouded by my need to consume the ever-changing news coming out of Washington, to call my representatives, and to figure out where help is most needed.

The Wade + Belle family is made up of women, immigrants, members of the LGBTQ community, single mothers, and people of color. It is incredibly important to me that each and every team member feels protected and knows that the Wade + Belle values ensure their safety in the workplace. But in the outside world? Well, that’s another story.

I believe we, the citizens of this country, will have to take a larger role in ensuring that the people and groups we are most passionate about are taken care of during this unsettled and tumultuous time. While there are many issues that need our attention right now, the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the threat to so many of losing their health care resonates with us deeply.

This is not 50% of profits, this is 50% of all sales. If you are purchasing a $20 pair of tights, $10 of that will be going to Planned Parenthood. Between our mailing list and social channels, there are 50,000 of us. If each person purchases one pair of tights, Wade + Belle will make a $500,000 donation. Yes, big ambition, but that has never stopped us before.

Our company mission is to make it easier to be a woman, by making our basic clothing more comfortable. We want you to focus on your goals, your dreams, your family, your career… not your waistline. The influence we have, as women, to effect change is powerful. It is time to stand up for what we believe in.

Stay loud. Stay active. Stay passionate.

It starts here.  It starts now.

So Who Had the Amazing Idea to Invent Tights Anyway?

You might be surprised to hear that tights were invented by a man, Allen Grant. Sr., in 1959. But you won't be surprised to hear that he did so at the request of his wife!  They are too good not to have been a woman's idea. Let's be honest, men would have kept us suffering in garters (and school girl uniforms if they had theiri own way!) According to the Smithsonian and Allen Grant Jr., the inventor's son, it all started when Grant and his wife, Ethel Boone Grant, were on an overnight train returning home from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Ethel was pregnant at the time and was finding it difficult to manage her stockings and garter belt over her expanding belly. As a proper lady wouldn't be seen in public without her hosiery (obvi), she informed her husband that this would be her last trip with him until their child was born. Tell him Ethel!

Grant gave that some thought and asked Ethel what she thought of a pair of underwear with stockings attached to them, which would avoid the hassle of a garter belt. Ethel thought it was a great idea and stitched together a rough sample that Grant took to his office as he was running Glen Raven Mills Textile Company at the time. With the help of his colleagues, he developed what they called "Panti-Legs" and launched the product in department stores.

But, it wasn't until the mid-1960s when the mini skirt was the new "in" thing to wear and garters actually couldn't be worn with them that the concept took off. Sales of pantyhose sky rocketed as fashion forward women wanted a pair of their own. We like that Ethel!

New Year's Resolutions

Happy 2014! It's that time of year again. The holidays are over (sad), and it's back to the daily grind. It's also that time of year when so many of us whole heartedly make resolutions that we don't stick to. Not surprisingly, the top 10 New Year's Resolutions are:

1. Lose weight

2. Get organized

3. Spend less, save more

4. Enjoy life to the fullest

5. Stay fit and healthy

6. Learn something exciting

7. Quit smoking

8. Help others in their dreams

9. Fall in love

10. Spend more time with family

Regardless of whether or not we stick to our resolutions, it's good to think about how we want to improve ourselves and our lives. The things on the list above are much nicer and more important than the things we think about on a daily basis and our shorter term goals. It's good to make these resolutions year after year, even if we don't follow through as thoroughly as we'd like because they are good things to aspire to long term.

So here's to New Year's Resolutions and better and more fulfilling lives in 2014! Oh, and if number 1(the whole losing weight thing) turns out to be a challenge, why not cut yourself some slack and get comfortable in your Not Too Tights :)? And if you have or do lose weight, why not feel it in your tights, no need for the sausage roll at the top of your tights ESPECIALLY when you don't deserve it!
